We have been making these onions for so long I am not sure of what inspired it – but it works great! There is another recipe for Grilled Sliced Onions you can check out too.

When we make this we usually do one onion for two people. It is so amazingly simple to make and almost like candy – without the sugar. If you don’t have any Steak Sauce, check out the recipe for one on this site

Ingredients

  • 1 whole sweet Onion
  • 1T Steak Sauce
  • A bit of Butter
  • Foil to wrap

Instructions

  1. Cut the top and bottom off of the Onion and peel it.
  2. Take a paring knife and cut a one inch square through the Onion and remove it.
  3. Dice the core very fine leaving off any of the stem that may be at the bottom of the core
  4. In a small bowl mix the diced onion and Steak Sauce
  5. Place the whole onion on a piece of foil large enough to wrap the Onion in.
  6. Put the butter down the hole in the Onion
  7. Put the mixture in the bowl in the hole in the Onion and if any left over mound on the top.
  8. Seal the Onion with the foil. I usually make it into a sealed tent by taking the edges and folding them over tightly and bringing them close to the onion.
  9. Grill on indirect heat for 45 to 60 minutes – depending on the size. You can do them in the oven too at about 375 for the same amount of time.
  10. To check to see if it is done by piercing with a small knife. If it goes in and out easily it is done, if not leave it and check it again in a few more minutes
  11. Unwrap and serve. Usually we just cut it in half and place on the plate. You could rough chop it too before plating. It is your Onion so you can do what you want. You can cry if you want to. Not from the grilled onion but because it looks and tastes so great!
